How To Auto Login With GNOME 3 in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

The default login session for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot is Unity. With so many issues with Unity, gnome-shell Gnome 3 desktop is being preferred and installed by many Ubuntu users. In order to make Gnome 3 desktop the default login session in Ubuntu 11.10, you have to disable auto-login from Unity, log out, log back in via Gnome and enable auto login. There isn’t any simple GUI based solution either. In this post , we will show you terminal based solution to auto login with Gnome in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.

If you want to make Ubuntu 11.10 auto login into Gnome Shell , run the following commands in the terminal.

sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s gnome-shell

If you want to revert the changes and make Unity again the default login session for Ubuntu 11.10 , run the following command in the terminal.

sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s ubuntu

If you want to make Ubuntu 11.10 auto login into Gnome classic desktop , at first install the Gnome session fallback by running the following commands in the terminal.

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Once installed , run the following command to complete the process.

sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults -s gnome-classic
