Search Spotify Songs from Unity Music Lens using Spotify Scope

Spotify Scope is another music scope for Unity Music Lens which adds Spotify as a resource to Unity Music lens and lets you search spotify songs and their albums in the lens.  On clicking the spotify songs, they are played in native Spotify Linux client.

When you use Spotify Scope, the songs from Spotify are displayed with a Spotify symbolic icons at the bottom right of the thumnails for the song.

You can use Spotify Scope in Ubuntu 11.10 and Ubuntu 12.04. In order to use it, at first you must have native Spotify Linux client installed in your Ubuntu.

To install the native Spotify Linux client , you need to download the spotify-client-qt package from the download link given at the end of the post and use Ubuntu Software center to install it.

You can also install it from the terminal using the instructions given below.

At first, add Spotify public key by running following commands in the terminal.

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 4E9CFF4E

Now, run the following commands in the terminal to add Spotify repository

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list

Then, copy and paste the following at the end of the file and save the file.

deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free

Once the file is saved with the changes, you should run following commands in the terminal to update the repositories and then install native Spotify Linux client.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install spotify-client-qt

Once the native Spotify Linux client is installed, you can install Spotify scope by adding its official PPA by running following commands in the terminal.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:scopes-packagers/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install unity-scope-spotify

Once the commands are executed, log out and log back in to use the lens.
