How To Remove the Real Name of User from Top Panel in Ubuntu 11.10
This tutorial will teach you how to remove the real name of the user from the Unity as well as Gnome Shell top panel in Ubuntu 11.10 .

To get started, run the following commands to install Ubuntu tweak via PPA.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
Once installed, launch the Ubuntu tweak from Unity Dash and under Tweaks tab , click on Session Control option in Startup section.

Now, under Session Control, you can see Session Menu Options and User Menu Options to control your system session related features.
Under User Menu Options , disable the Show user’s real name on the panel option.

Then close the Ubuntu Tweak dialog and log out and log back in to see the changes. The real name of the user will be removed in Unity top panel of your Ubuntu 11.10 as shown in the first screenshot.
To revert the changes , you can enable the Show user’s real name on the panel option again.
You can hide the real name of user in the Gnome Shell top panel by installing Remove User Name Gnome Shell extension.
To install the extension, open its extension page in Firefox web browser . Then, simply switch the ON/OFF button to ON as shown below. Then, press Install to install the gnome shell extension.

The real name of the user will be instantly removed from the top panel of Gnome Shell.

You can also install the gnome shell extension using GNOME Tweak Tool.
In this way, you can remove the real name of user from top panel in Ubuntu 11.10.
